Parent Participation

Parent Participation is a valued tradition at APS.  It helps maintain a sense of community and allows for parents to interact with each other. Parents are asked to volunteer in meaningful ways to help in the organization and operation of the school – from contributing extra changes of clothing or seedlings for the garden to preparing the monthly newsletter, to routine maintenance like painting and repairs, to organizing outings or field trips.

Parent Meetings are another way for parents to explore their children’s progress at school and share and discuss their concerns. Typical topics of meetings are how boys and girls learn and behave differently, how children express themselves when challenged, how social influences like news or popular games enter the learning environment.

Parent Conferences provide structured feedback from the teachers about how your child is behaving, growing and responding to the learning and social interactions with teachers and other children.

In addition, APS provides parents with the opportunity for some monthly downtime, such as:

PNO - Parents' Night Out. Under supervision by teachers, children bring their pajamas and play at school on a Friday night while parents go out and have grown-up time together.

Testimonials

We are so happy with APS - it's a school that meets so many of our needs. Our two children are there together and they are thriving in the loving, play-based exploratory approach of the APS teachers. For our family, APS is like our extended family and the supportive centered community we always hoped for. The teachers have taught us so much about how to nurture our children's curiosity while also being consistent in how we communicate with them about everything from potty training to napping to being respectful to others. Our daughter started the preschool program at APS when she was 2, our son started in the infant/toddler program when he was 9 months, and we feel so lucky to have APS in our lives!

APS has taught my child to not only be self  sufficient, but self confident. He is most importantly, self aware. He understands his limits while he feels secure enought to constantly test them. What can he try again? He is encouraged, daily, to experiment and create his own world. It is this feeling of control that makes my son so brave. He knows how to tell his peers and advet what he needs, wants, understands or questions. APS has helped shape a most interesting child. I am so grateful!
