Philosophy

At APS we take our inspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education. The Reggio Emilia approach is named after the area in northern Italy where parents after World War II developed learning principles of respect, responsibility, and community for a self-guided young learner curriculum. Today, the city of Reggio Emilia is a center of innovative education where teachers from around the world look for inspiration.

The Reggio Emilia philosophy recognizes that children themselves provide the ideas and the inspiration for learning, and that the learning is a community experience that parents, teachers and children can explore together.

To promote this approach, children at APS in the past retained their Key teachers from toddlerhood to graduation.  We modified that  arrangement but still focus on a “continuity of care” to foster strong relationships that are vital for the socio-emotional development of young children.

Our philosophy is rooted in the foundations of early child development and learning theory. Our beliefs are based on the work noted by developmental theorists: Piaget, Dewey, Erickson and Bruner.

Our philosophy helps direct our curriculum to ensure that it remains play-based, emergent, anti-bias, and empowered for conflict resolution.
