Curriculum
Play based – Play is the work of the children. We take a hands-on, child directed approach to learning. Through it they learn to make sense of the world and the relationships around them. It is a vital part of our curriculum. Emergent – Children are engaged learners and we seek to support their deepest learning. Our teachers build on the interest and learning of the children to frame curriculum: this leads to a dynamic interplay between the child and the teacher. Anti-bias - APS also stands for All People’s School. We take an active approach to challenges, prejudice, stereotypes and bias. This approach is an integral part of the learning process for the entire APS community-parents, teachers and children alike. We also promote an empathetic approach to conflict resolution. Conflict Resolution – We seek to empower children to identify their emotions; to verbalize their ideas and feelings; to listen to their peers and to find solutions that meet the needs of each person concerned. Conflict resolution skill building is woven into our curriculum and we utilize every opportunity to practice these skills.
